Revealing Tripartite Quantum Discord with Tripartite Information Diagram
A new measure based on the tripartite information diagram is proposed for
identifying quantum discord in tripartite systems. The proposed measure
generalizes the mutual information underlying discord from bipartite to
tripartite systems, and utilizes both one-particle and two-particle projective
measurements to reveal the characteristics of the tripartite quantum discord.
The feasibility of the proposed measure is demonstrated by evaluating the
tripartite quantum discord for systems with states close to
Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger, W, and biseparable states. In addition, the
connections between tripartite quantum discord and two other quantum
correlations---namely genuine tripartite entanglement and genuine tripartite
Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering---are briefly discussed. The present study
considers the case of quantum discord in tripartite systems. However, the
proposed framework can be readily extended to general N-partite systems
An Event-Ontology-Based Approach to Constructing Episodic Knowledge from Unstructured Text Documents
Document summarization is an important function for knowledge management when a digital library of text documents grows. It allows documents to be presented in a concise manner for easy reading and understanding. Traditionally, document summarization adopts sentence-based mechanisms that identify and extract key sentences from long documents and assemble them together. Although that approach is useful in providing an abstract of documents, it cannot extract the relationship or sequence of a set of related events (also called episodes). This paper proposes an event-oriented ontology approach to constructing episodic knowledge to facilitate the understanding of documents. We also empirically evaluated the proposed approach by using instruments developed based on Bloom’s Taxonomy. The result reveals that the approach based on proposed event-oriented ontology outperformed the traditional text summarization approach in capturing conceptual and procedural knowledge, but the latter was still better in delivering factual knowledge

Tailoring excitonic states of van der Waals bilayers through stacking configuration, band alignment and valley-spin
Excitons in monolayer semiconductors have large optical transition dipole for
strong coupling with light field. Interlayer excitons in heterobilayers, with
layer separation of electron and hole components, feature large electric dipole
that enables strong coupling with electric field and exciton-exciton
interaction, at the cost that the optical dipole is substantially quenched (by
several orders of magnitude). In this letter, we demonstrate the ability to
create a new class of excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) hetero-
and homo-bilayers that combines the advantages of monolayer- and
interlayer-excitons, i.e. featuring both large optical dipole and large
electric dipole. These excitons consist of an electron that is well confined in
an individual layer, and a hole that is well extended in both layers, realized
here through the carrier-species specific layer-hybridization controlled
through the interplay of rotational, translational, band offset, and
valley-spin degrees of freedom. We observe different species of such
layer-hybridized valley excitons in different heterobilayer and homobilayer
systems, which can be utilized for realizing strongly interacting
excitonic/polaritonic gases, as well as optical quantum coherent controls of
bidirectional interlayer carrier transfer either with upper conversion or down
conversion in energy
A retrospective study of magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound ablation for uterine myoma in Taiwan
AbstractObjectiveTo report our experiences with 40 patients who were treated with magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound surgery (MRgFUS) for uterine fibroids and their 6-month follow-up status.Materials and MethodsA total of 40 patients with uterine fibroids underwent MRgFUS from January 2009 to November 2011. The Uterine Fibroid Symptoms and Quality of Life Questionnaire was used to determine the patients' Symptom Severity Scores (SSS) prior to and 6 months after treatment. The nonperfused volume (NPV) values and NPV ratio were obtained immediately at the end of the treatment and at 6 months follow-up.ResultsNo procedure-related complications were noted throughout the 6-month follow-up period among the 40 patients who underwent MRgFUS for uterine fibroids. The mean reduction in SSS in our patients after 6 months was 43.7%, and the mean reduction of fibroid volume was 31.7%. In addition, the mean reduction of NPV and mean NPV ratio was 52.7% and 33.3%, respectively.ConclusionThe results obtained from this study demonstrated that MRgFUS can be safely and effectively used to ablate uterine fibroids to produce a significant decrease in mean fibroid volume and improve SSS for up to 6 months after treatment
